Ive experienced pregnancy so I’m no stranger to the weirdness that consumes your body during this “special” time, particularly when it comes to hair. Every woman should experience having a beard at least once right?
I see woman every day in my salon moaning about their post preggo baldness hair loss so i consider myself some what of an expert on the subject. HOWEVER a recent face time call with my heavily pregnant sister would prove I’m not the know it all i thought i was.
We were about 5 minutes into the call when i raised the question, “why are you wearing an Annie wig?” Given she has a 2 year old daughter is seemed obvious i had caught them in the middle of a fun game of “dress ups”, it was small talk, no answer was necessary. But what came out of her mouth next had me in stitches.
“Pregnancy turned me GINGER!”.
That’s right her hair had turned red. At first she tried to blame the shampoo i had given her but laughing in her face soon shut that down. So i did what every good sister with a hair salon would do and bleached it back to it’s former blonde glory and started googling this strange phenomenon.
After investing 20 minutes of my life i will never get back researching the issue it appears, although rare, your hair turning red during pregnancy IS A THING. Why? Well google seems to chalk it up to changing hormones or a lack of protein. But there is one other theory……………
APPARENTLY it is possible to catch some of the father of the baby’s DNA inside you whilst pregnant. And given my sister’s husband comes from a long line of gingers this is the explanation i choose to believe.
Will it stay red? As much as i hope so i seriously doubt it. Only time will tell………
